Wördos are people who care about the precise and accurate use of the English language. We want to be sure there is CLARITY in communication. We believe that the failure to write clearly jeopardizes understanding and believability. Writing well is important for establishing credibility and competence.
The group was founded in the early 1980s. One of the founders was Björn Björnson. It is in his memory that we use the umlaut in Wördos.
Wördos meet the third Wednesday of every month in Bloomington, Minnesota to talk about words. Some of us are retired senior newspaper executives. Some are current or former writers, editors, and teachers. At our meetings we discuss the errors we have found in local and national media.
We do have some rules. This first one is: we have no rules. We have no chairman, president, or officers of any kind. We have no articles of incorporation or bylaws. We have no dues, no minutes, and no social chairman. We have no members. We do have interested people who show up for meetings. They are "attendees" also called "Wördos." We do not discuss our health or grandchildren.
For years this web site has included the monthly Newsletter written by Bob Shaw. However, Bob has decided to truly retire and will no longer compose the Newsletter. As a substitute we have included a convenient list of Right Word - Wrong Word.
